The Mersey Gateway Bridge was awarded 'Outright Winner' at The Concrete Society Awards 2018.

The 50th Awards’ celebrations took place at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, London on 21st November 2018. This unique project is the UK’s only long-span cable-supported bridge constructed primarily using in-situ concrete, thus representing a significant advancement in the material’s application for this purpose. It is the first of its type to be constructed in this way, facilitated by the innovative use of the MSS (movable scaffolding system).

MAX FRANK's Pecafil® permanent formwork was selected for use on the scheme, as a sheet pile separation layer, for the following reasons:

  • There was minimum working space in the cofferdams
  • To achieve significant cost savings
  • Formwork material is neutral to groundwater

The use of Pecafil® on this project avoided the need for heavy traditional formwork. Pecafil® enabled fast and simple installation in the temporary cofferdams, for the three main bridge pylon foundations, the North and South approach viaduct pile caps and abutment bases. The Judges commented, "The range of concrete produced here had to perform to very tight tolerances and varying strengths. This structure represents a significant advancement in the concrete's applications for bridge construction. It works as a big bridge should".

MAX FRANK would like to congratulate the Mersey Gateway Bridge project and the Contractors for their outstanding work! For further information about this year's awards visit: www.concrete-awards.org.uk
